We Honor Veterans Program, Level 2

We are committed to honoring Veterans at the end of life & are proud members of We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization and the Veterans Administration. The goal of the program is simple – to care for and honor those who have served when they reach the end of life. By working through the partner levels and participating in community partnerships and collaborations, NHHC is able to educate, engage, and expand awareness to Veterans and their families. A vast majority of Veterans are not enrolled in VA and may not be aware of end-of-life services and benefits available to them, including the Medicare Hospice Benefit and VA-paid hospice care.

NHHC Honorary Veteran Activities:

  • Acknowledging veteran status upon initial hospice admission

  • Thanking veterans for their service

  • Sharing local veteran community resources with patients and families

  • Integrating best practices for providing end-of-life care to NHHC veterans

  • Educating local community agencies about Veterans’ issues and benefits

  • Providing recognition certificates and an American flag to each NHHC patient

  • Out of respect for our veterans, when they pass away at one of our residential communities we host a Veterans Escort Ceremony. The patients are escorted and draped with an American flag to the front entrance while military music is being played and given an "angels walk" where staff follow the body to the exit. The flag is then folded upon their farewell and given to the family.

  • Continually assessing and improving our ability to serve veterans

About the VA Pension

About the Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension benefit

In 1952 Congress passed Title 38 of the United States Code, creating what we now call the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and authorizing benefits for veterans. One of these benefits is the Non-Service Connected Pension, with “Aid & Attendance.” (Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension benefit.)

Even though the pension has been around for 60 years, very few people know about it or understand how it works. Veterans Home Care has experience successfully helping veteran families apply for and receive the pension.
